Cincinnati Social Media Breakfast 5 Rocked the Hizzous with Pandora
The Cincinnati Social Media Breakfast keeps getting bigger and better, thanks to our fabulous organizer, the man, the myth, the legend, Mr. Kevin Dugan.
The fifth installation of the Social Medai breakfast was packed (sold out in under an hour), and we were honored to have SMB founder Bryan Person join us!.
This breakfast featured Pandora Internet Radio founder Tim Westergren. The story of Pandora was inspiring, as was Tim; here are some of the highlights:
- Pandora has 22 million registered users with virtually no marketing budget “If you build a product that people like and if you treat them well, they’ll do your marketing for you”.
- Pandora responds to every email that they receive.
- The average Pandora user tells 8 people about the service.
- They “view every communication with a listener as an opportunity, not as a cost”.
- Goal = to replace radio.
- Treating users well paid off. Pandora asked their users to help them by contacting their congress person after new policy decisions were made that would have effectively tripled royalty costs and made Pandora not financially feasible. All other legal/lobbyist routes had failed. The response was overwhelming and users effectively shut down the entire Washington fax system. More people contacted Congress about Pandora than because of the Iraq war. The new policies are under review.
- Pandora is one of the top 3 stations in major markets.
- The Pandora iphone app is the #1 app and has over 3 million users in only 6 months.

Great re-cap! Thank you!
I’m glad you were able to take a break from your busy jet-set lifestyle ;P to join us, Krista!
Yeah, yeah…man I agree with. The success of this event is thanks to several folks.

And of course Tim Westergren from Pandora.
Love the pics Krista. Thx for posting!
Great wrap-up post and photos, Krista, and a real pleasure meeting you and chatting this morning. Love your off-angled shots as well.
The Pandora story is a compelling one, and it’s certainly one I use almost every day. I’m one of the 3 million iPhone users who has downloaded the app, too.
See you at Nicholson’s this afternoon!
