Cincinnati Social Media Breakfast 4 - It’s All About Sharing

The Fourth Cincinnati Social Media Breakfast (cincysmb4 for short) organized by the fabulous Kevin Dugan (@prblog) was a great success.  I would post his picture, but they always turn out kind of weird… one day we’ll play “caption the Kevin” pictures, but until then, I’ll save him the embarrasment of a random photo.

Anywho, the breakfast had a killer turnout (I think that it sold out in a few hours) with lots of familiar faces from the Cincinnati Women Blogger Holiday Party the night before and a number of new ones.  One of my favorite things about the SMB is that it tends to draw in a crowd beyond the social media regulars (not that I don’t love you guys) with opportunities to meet new people.

So, at the breakfast Tim Schigel, CEO of ShareThis gave a great presentation on the democratization (and proliferation) of sharing.  To be honest, I always kind of wondered about sharethis - Why were there so many people with so much money working to build a widget?  The truth is, Sharethis is much more than a widget and can be a powerful tool for both publishers and sharers (or users).

Benefits to the publisher:

• Easy sharing by your audience = more traffic and happy readers
• You can get stats on what is being shared where

Benefits to the sharer:

• Super-easy to share accross multiple platforms (mobile, email, social networking sites)
• Cool toolbar for sites that don’t use it
• Can track what you shared with who (no more… crap, where was that link???)

This is obviously a quick look and there is much more to it (as you may notice, I don’t use it on my blogs yet)… I’m planning to spend some time playing with sharethis and I’ll write a more indepth review then (plus I’ll actually start using it on my blogs).

One other important feature of the SMB is *free* breakfast, which was sponsored by Game Day Communication’s - THANK YOU - The coffee was great and much needed at such an early hour in the morning!!!!!!
